After my return from Leyden, I worked as a ship's doctor for three and a half years, sailing to the Far East and other places. When I came back I settled in London and married Mary Burton. Two years later I decided to go to sea again. I was the doctor on two ships and over the next six years made several trips to the East and West Indies, which gave me some small income.
